Memorial Day Weekend - 1988
Short story .....

We did a whole lot of camping back in those days ..... as often as possibly allowed.  Dave and I also did a lot of snow camping too.  So conditions never really were an issue .... we were prepared for about anything and enjoyed anytime away from the hustle and bustle of the central valley ..... Modesto, Calif. area.

We had decided to take off that Memorial weekend to head over the Sonora Pass to one of our favorite campgrounds .... Obsidian.   We had asked Dave's son Dave and his wife Julie and their 5 mo. old daughter, our granddaughter lauralew to join us for the weekend.  The two men were working together at that time.  Yes!

So Julie and I with Laura of course, decide to head up early .... before the boys got off work and get camp set up.  So with our Subaru Brat loaded to the hilt, we took off over the pass and found the perfect place to set up camp.

Laura slept most the way over and also while we pitched our tent (Dave's and mine) ..... Dave and Julie had decided to sleep in their vehicle or something .... I honestly can't remember, but I know they didn't have a tent.  We also get a fire going and dinner started.  When the guys arrive things are pretty well done.

After dinner all of us being pooped said goodnight and then the storm moved in.  A nice winter snow storm.  Waking up and checking on the kids we asked them to join us in the tent which .... they said no.  Again, the reasoning I'm not sure.  But we had a heater ..... and a big enough tent for six people .... crowded .... but it could be done.  They may just leave.

After reminding them that there were mountain passes no matter how they decided to go home to cross ..... they were going to wait and see.  We went back to the tent and fell asleep.  A few hours later .... and snow .... they had gone.

And seeing as how lauralew  is here today blogging at Mindsay .... they obviously made it home safely.  That was Laura's first camping trip.

Dave and I stayed ..... it was cold but the snow ended up clearing out.  And we were literally the only ones in the campground.  Peaceful.  And really didn't know if the kids had made it home ok until we came home a day or so later.  But guess we figured someone would come and get us if they hadn't.

Not so sure I would be able to do that now.  LOL ..... I'd worry like hell.

Peace.  J.
